Clinging to Hope a Scripture at a Time

Posted Oct 16 2013 9:00am

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge. (Psalm 62:5-8)

I searched for calm during a recent life-altering medical event. I wasn’t sleeping well, was having disturbing dreams; my mind was focused daily on what was happening and I was filled with anxiety. I sought counsel from a few trusted people but knew this journey was mine to walk.

But I was comforted in knowing God was with me. So once the logistics were settled–what, when, how–I sat down in my quiet home–kids and husband off to school, puppy lying next to me–and opened my Bible.

I had been given an empty journal for my birthday from a friend I “met” at Rest Ministries, a dear person who provides much spiritual guidance to me on my journey. I decided this journal would have a perfect use–it would be my scripture journal to carry my favorite passages. The parchment paper was inviting such beautiful words.

I paged through my Bible, stopping at highlighted places I had gone before. I happen to love the psalms so several were put in the journal–as I hand wrote what “spoke” to me this sunny September morning. All total there were eight entries; I am sure more will fill this beautiful book as my life unfolds. As I reviewed the scriptures, I noticed one was a duplicate–Psalm 62:5-8.

Perfect, that is the one that would guide me as I faced my newest challenge, I thought.

I made a decision then that I would memorize Psalm 62 and reflect on the hope that it provides. And if anxiety or uncertainty enter my mind at any time I am confident this beautiful Psalm will be a source of comfort, strength and hope.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for providing me with beautiful scriptures which bring comfort and hope when needed most. Amen.

About the author Laura Seil Ruszczyk lives in New York with her husband and three kids. She retired from her job as an elementary school counselor in 2012. She is writing a book about her struggles with dysautonomia _ a neurological condition in which the autonomic nervous system malfunctions, affected such things as blood pressure, heart rate, breathing and temperature regulation.

Have you found a favorite Bible passage which brings you great comfort?

I love this song, truly! Israel Houghton sings “Every Prayer” and I think you will find the lyrics beautiful. He sings of how every prayer counts, how we need to just hold on, don’t despite the tears, and how God is always near. You may only watch an occasional video. I encourage today to be the day you decide to listen. -Lisa
