Other sufferers of ME/CFS will know that a dose of the common cold can be severely detrimental to recovery. Unfortunately, with ME the immune system doesn't work the way it should, so any contact with cold or flu sufferers generally means they will suffer the same fate...ughh!
Researchers in the US have found that taking echinacea can halve the risk of catching a cold. They discovered that the herbal remedy lowered the odds by 58% and reduced the duration of the virus by a day and a half.
It was also found that taking echinaea in combination with vitamin c reduced the incidence by 86%.
Personally, I have found that vitamin c markedly reduces the impact of a cold and does often prevent its onset but I have yet to try echinacea. I feel a trip to the chemist coming on!
If you do intend trying echinacea do talk to your doctor first; it's always wise to seek medical advice before trying any new regime.
