A few of my Favorite (non-toxic) Things …

Posted Feb 03 2014 10:21pm

toxic In my last post, I talked about having to deal with toxicity again.  Not wanting to leave you hanging, I thought I would take a moment and share a few of my favorite (non-toxic) things with you.

As I stated in my last post, I have a list of items I had to change out in order to reduce my exposure to toxic chemicals but I don’t want to overwhelm you so I am only going to do a few of my favorite things today.  I will follow-up with future posts on the other items to help those of you who have contacted me to find out what new products I have chosen to replace the ones that I had been using. A recent new discovery was a tea that has become my all time favorite tea in the morning.  I drink it all day but I love it first thing.  I enjoy it so much it has pretty much replaced my morning coffee.

I have to give a hat tip to Food Babe as she recently did a post on what is in so many of our teas. (If you aren’t following / reading her blog, you really should be!)  I was stunned to discover I had to throw out half of my teas!  Ugh.  So frustrating.

Numi But on the flip, positive side, I discovered Numi.  I adore their teas despite the fact that they are good for you and not full of toxic garbage.

My favorite Numi tea is the Numi Organic Chocolate Pu-erh Tea.  Oh My Gosh!  Talk about smooth, velvety and CHOCOLATE!!!!!!  The smell as the tea is steeping just makes me smile and get all warm and gooey on the inside!!!

Take a look at the below description of the tea!  Yummy!

This velvety infusion combines black Pu∙erh tea and organic cocoa. Accented by whole vanilla beans and sweet orange peel, this decadent blend is rounded off with nutmeg and cinnamon for a spicy finish

I think that says it all.  Love, love, love this tea!

My second product, or more accurately, products, is a line of hair care products I recently switched to.  Zero on the toxicity rating with EWG .  I am using Hugo ‘s Coconut Shampoo and Condition plus their Styling Gel and Brown Sugar Body Wash.

I was a little nervous when I saw it was just all natural but when I read the following on the website, I decided to look deeper.

Never any: parabens, phenoxyethanol, sulfates, PEGs, propylene glycol, petroleum products, silicones, phthalates, synthetic surfactants, artificial colors or synthetic fragrances.  Made from 100% Natural Ingredients, Vegan.  Soy free.  Gluten free. Cruelty free.

Then I discovered the zero rating on EWG as I stated above and I knew it was worth a try.  I was not disappointed!

hugo shampoo The shampoo is great for my hair when I wear it curly.  It smells great, lathers well, and conditions really good.  It isn’t perfect for me as far as the top part of my hair that I bleach every 6-8 weeks to hide my gray hair but other than that it is superb.  (psst … on the bleach parts or very dry/damaged areas, I rinse my hair several times a week with apple cider vinegar which restores the pH balance and works like a charm.  Plus I deep condition with Coconut Oil.  The kind I also use for cooking.  Yup!  You heard that right!)

hugo styling gel I also got their styling gel which is alcohol free and I really like it a lot.  When you first put it in your hair, you think it might stay hard and crunchy but once you dry your hair, it becomes soft as satin!  Love this stuff.

Thee smell is bright, clean and lovely.  I believe it is honeysuckle.  However, the smells dissipates rather quickly so no worries!

With my curly hair (it’s now mostly ringlets) I am better able to manage the chaos!  ha ha!

Now on to my favorite Hugo product to date.  Our water here in Tulsa has been awful.  My skin itches so bad despite the pounds and pounds of lotion that I put on it.  I just couldn’t stand it anymore.  It was literally driving me nuts.

Brown_Sugar_Kumquot_Body_Polish So I picked up Hugo’s Kumquat Brown Sugar Body Polish.  Oh my!  I was in heaven with the first use!

Not only did this sluff off the dry, itchy skin, but my skin was full of moisture and soft as a baby’s butt!  The transformation was unreal.  At $12 a container this had to prove itself to me if I was ever going to purchase a second container.

I can tell you, $12 is a steal for this container.  I look forward to scrubbing my skin and drenching it in the almond, sweet orange, and jojoba seed oil.  It feels luxurious and healthy!  I just cannot say enough about this product.  It will become a fixed, year-round staple in my bathroom, let me tell you!  Wow!

The last two products were introduced to me by a good friend and are from a local Tulsa Company.  Theraganics was created by

[...] sisters Stephanie & Jennifer Roudabush of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  They each had their own set of problems that were brought to the table, leading to their mission that continues to fuel their passion in what they do.  Theraganics products are handcrafted by them from scratch using many organic luxury base oils and are superior performing.  The addition of clays, herbs, teas, and real fruits/veggies makes each product truly unique and purposeful.

Creme Brulee Lip Balm Their lip balm blew me away.  Besides the horrible dry lips we get during the winter months (ya all know how that is!) I had just developed a cold sore and I kid you not!  Within two days it was healed and gone.  I was like, “holy cow”!

And the flavors are amazing!  They taste good too!  That should be a good sign right there! My favorite right now is Creme Brulee.  How can I go wrong with a French dessert?  Right?

My lips have never been in better shape.  And I love that I am supporting a local, small business.  What better way to show the kind of top-notch, health conscious, quality products I want to use than purchasing locally from innovate companies that care!

detox soap The last product, also by Theraganics , was a surprise to me to be honest.  Again recommended by a friend, I didn’t know what to expect – or perhaps more accurately – I wasn’t really sure I needed to detox my face.

Well, this soap put that to rest!  The first few days, I had a slight red rash on my face as this soap was pulling out the toxins.  It didn’t hurt or itch, I was just a little red.

Now I use it faithfully because my skin is clear, smoother and just in better shape.

I do need to use moisturizer afterwards (coconut oil!  ha!) but when all is said and done, my face is so soft.

I hate that as consumers we have to be soooo diligent in the products that we buy, but I love that there are companies out there still who believe that products don’t have to be toxic, cheap, or huge money makers.  They have to be pure, good and a fair price.

I also love that I can put my money where my mouth is and feel good about the product, my health, and the positive impact I can create towards healthier, better quality, low toxicity products that our good for me, my space and the environment.

Interestingly, I don’t even have to have the government force me to do this.
