One of the main problems with childhood obesity, besides the obvious dependence we as a culture have on sugar, is the fact that even foods which are supposed to be healthy for children to eat - such as their main meals that supposedly do not contain sugar, are highly processed and often altered chemically, full of antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, or other toxic substances which detract from the nutritional content. When these foods are consumed, they have dire effects on health and a person's ability to maintain proper weight.
To be healthy and to be able to learn and grow, children need real, whole, traditional foods - just like adults. Children are especially in need of these substances because they are growing and developing, and possess smaller bodies with quicker metabolisms which process food at a faster rate.
Saturated fats are of paramount importance. Children need healthy saturated fats and cholesterol from healthy, organic sources like grass-fed meats, raw dairy, raw nuts, pastured poultry and the eggs that come from those birds, and healthy oils like coconut oil, olive oil, flax oil, pumpkin seed oil, avocado oil, and walnut oil. They also need game meats from healthy, pastured sources, fish from healthy sources, and real fermented foods. Of course, they also need fresh organic fruits and vegetables.
Because so much of what children eat is processed, their bodies begin to notice the effects of malnutrition at a very young age, and developmental processes are impeded and hindered, and they cannot function in school nor learn easily. Attention spans are affected as well as weight, blood pressure, heart and brain function.
Most of our food comes from industrially-processed sources like commercial, conventional, factory, and industrial agriculture sources. Because of the severe departure from real, unadulterated foods in the United States since the industrial revolution, there has been a marked change in the health condition of the average person, and children are no exception. Add in the modern conveniences of cars, computers, movies, video games, and other electronic devices which promote sedentary lifestyles, and what's left is a recipe for disasterous health consequences. Children are all too accustomed to eating fast food, packaged foods, and convenience foods. These foods are pervasively available and eaten by the masses. Parents have busy schedules and lack the time to devote to shopping for and preparing healthy foods for their families.
If we take care to obtain our foods from sustainablen and truly organic sources, our children will not only realize better health but we would also help bolster our sagging economy and local communities.
A return to whole, balanced, and real foods as eaten by our historical ancestors would help tremendously in winning the epidemic against obesity, diabetes, and heart disease in our juevenile populations.
