Video Game Industry Will Be Paid Legal Fees

Posted Apr 09 2009 7:14pm

In March of 2005, Dr. Michael Rich, Director of CMCH, testified before the Illinois Senate and House Judicial Committee on what scientific research has shown about the effects of video games on youth.  Illinois proceeded to pass the Safe Games Act, prohibiting the sale or rental of excessively violent or sexually explicit games to minors under age 18.

Last year, the law was ruled unconstitutional, and just recently, a federal judge ruled that the state of Illinois must pay over $500,000 in legal fees to the Entertainment Software Association, Video Software Dealers Association and Illinois Retail Merchants Association.

This Herald and Review article makes the point that it will take more than a law to protect children from potentially harmful content;  it will take actively engaged parents to decide whether the content of their children's video games is appropriate.
