Tucked Into His Own Bed

Posted Apr 21 2008 12:00am
I'm pleased to say that we're back home again and that Gavin's sleeping soundly in his own bed. We're all actually looking forward to our own bed again. We had gotten a room with a small fold-out bed this time around at Children's, so it was sardine city for a few nights. The things you do...and don't even care at this point in life. I think Jeff and I could fall asleep standing up at times.

Gavin's improved dramatically from Saturday. While he's still mostly just drinking things and eating popsicles, he's holding it down. YEAH!!! The doctors say that's the important thing right now and that he might not really eat for a little while longer. He was so pleased to be heading back home. He smiled and said, "There's the swimming place," when we passed by the place we were taking swimming lessons at until this ordeal got started. He sweetly asked to "dump some trash" on the way back into the neighborhood and continued to ask for a number of extra alleys to drive down before we headed home. As Jeff said, "How can you refuse a request like that?!?" And he and Garrett were so thrilled to see each other again. It's good to be home.

We're happy to have the first round of heavy-duty chemo behind us. While there is still weekly chemo (via outpatient infusions) in between heavy-duty inpatient rounds, for now we're at home. And we hope to stay here for as long as possible.

I met a couple of other moms up a the hospital in the last couple of days. It's great to get to talk to them. As one of the dads I met up there put it best, "We're all rowing the same boat." It's comforting to talk to others who are traveling a very similar journey.

The Smith boat is hoping to head downstream for a bit and enjoy some rest here at home.

Much love,
Stacie
