should a child who is 2 1/2 see a doctor with fever and weakness not eating well or drinking

my grandson was  left with me for a few hours, his mother said, that the day before, he was very weak and had a fever.  his dad took him home and put him to bed.  when I received him, he was still weak and not eating much or drinking. I made him drink more and offered different drinks, what do you suppose he has or has gotten.  his parents didn't think it necceary to see a docto
