Prominent Rhinoplasty Surgeon Addresses Special Considerations Of Performing Revision Rhinoplasty On Thin Nasal Skin

Posted Dec 18 2013 11:00am

information The Director of the Institute for Rhinoplasty and Nasal Reconstruction, Babak Azizzadeh, MD, FACS, released a new article in which he explains the special techniques used for revision rhinoplasty on patients with thin skin.

In a new article on, Beverly Hills rhinoplasty surgeon Babak Azizzadeh, MD, FACS, describes the special considerations involved in, and techniques used for, performing a revision rhinoplasty surgery on a patient with thin nasal skin. A common concern among patients seeking a revision surgery is whether or not the underlying cartilage and its irregularities will be visible due to thin nasal skin.

“Thin nasal skin presents an interesting challenge during revision rhinoplasty. Because the cartilage and skin have already been manipulated in a previous procedure, we need to take extra measures to ensure there is enough of a cushion between the cartilage and skin so that the cartilage does not protrude and create an unnatural appearance,” explained Dr. Azizzadeh.

By utilizing temporalis fascia or rib perichondrium, Dr. Azizzadeh can add a supportive layer of tissue between the skin and cartilage of the nose. These tissues work well to hide the underlying cartilage and produce a smooth result. Dr. Azizzadeh stresses the importance of visiting a facial plastic surgeon with a great deal of experience in revision rhinoplasty.

“While a primary rhinoplasty on a patient with thin nasal skin does present some challenge, a revision rhinoplasty is more complex because of the fact that the nose has already been worked on, healed, and formed scar tissue. Add thin nasal skin to the equation, and you need to make sure your surgeon has the proper training to create the most natural-looking result possible,” said Dr. Azizzadeh.

Dr. Azizzadeh is the Director of the Institute for Rhinoplasty and Nasal Reconstruction in Beverly Hills. He emphasizes natural-looking results and tailors every rhinoplasty to the individual to ensure the result is a face in balance. He takes his time with all his patients, thoroughly discussing with them their desired outcomes, and guiding them through every step of the process, whether it is their first rhinoplasty or a revision.

“It is important to me that my patients feel comfortable openly discussing their rhinoplasty goals and concerns, such as the concern over thin skin. The more open they are with me during our consultation, the better equipped I am to meet their needs. Likewise, I strive to be open with my patients so that they have realistic expectations,” said Dr. Azizzadeh.

Dr. Azizzadeh is a Harvard-trained sub-specialist in nasal and facial plastic surgery, recognized as a Top Doctor by the US News & World Report for rhinoplasty. He is one of the leading experts in the fields of primary, revision and ethnic rhinoplasty, and is the author of five bestselling books, including the definitive rhinoplasty textbook entitled “Master Techniques in Rhinoplasty.” Dr. Azizzadeh is double-board certified in both facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology, which gives him a distinctive insight into both the aesthetics and function of the nose.
