Poor Ghost

Posted Nov 04 2009 12:00am
The boys like inflatables. You know, the ones that people put in their yard for Halloween, Christmas, and the like. They recently fell in love with a ghost that lived in a yard in the back of our neighborhood. Every time we drove into the neighborhood they begged to drive by it. They each got so excited when the ghost was on their side of the road. The enthusiasm cracked me up.
Halloween came and went. Little did the boys know, the ghost couldn't stay inflated forever. Monday they requested another drive by. I warned them that the ghost may be gone because Halloween was over. We drove up. The ghost was there, only now the ghost was deflated.

Flat as a pancake. Sprawled out in the grass. Lifeless. You should have seen their faces. So sad. And Gavin's comment summed it all up.

"Poor ghost! Poor, poor ghost!"

It was hard to imagine that they had grown so attached to an inflatable Halloween decoration, but they had. And each time we've driven into the neighborhood since then, they have asked to see the ghost.

The poor, lifeless ghost that still lies in the front yard. And it just seems to make them sadder each time we drive by. I have tried to explain that the ghost probably won't get more air in it until next Halloween. And that the ghost will likely be put back in his "home" until then. I also tried to explain that after Gavin's birthday and after Thanksgiving we'd start to see more inflatables for Christmas. They liked that.

Garrett and I went into a store this afternoon. Halloween decoration sales are over and Christmas has officially hit the shelves. It's never too soon for the retail world! As we walked into the store, Garrett spotted it.

An inflatable.

Snoopy and his doghouse, all decked out with Christmas lights.

Garrett was so excited. Those Christmas inflatables Mommy was talking about came sooner than expected. Score!!

As we returned home, Garrett again asked to drive by the ghost's house. As we drove by, I slowed to an almost complete stop. A moment of silence, so to speak. The ghost has earned that much respect from the boys, that's for sure. And then Garrett put it all together with this much thought out statement.

"Mommy, that dog took all the air from the ghost and put it into his doghouse!"

And so it goes. Life has officially been sucked out of Halloween and we're moving on toward Christmas. These boys never cease to amaze me with the things that come out of their mouths.

Much love,
