my 18month old son has a fever and red sore gums wer his teeth are , what could it be?

my son came down with a fever a couple of days ago i thought it was just a virus and gave him calpol , but this morning i noticed that his gums are bright red where his teeth are , i am now very concenered , plz does any one no wot this could be , have the doctors this afternoon but cant wait !!
