Muscular Development Magazine Discusses Best Protein Powders For Vegetarians and Vegans

Posted Apr 17 2013 3:00pm

news Muscular Development magazine representative Brian Turner responds to a recent article in Men’s Fitness that lists eight recommended protein powders for vegetarian and vegan gym-goers.

According to Men’s Fitness, vegetarian protein powders still contain all the needed components “to get ripped and reap the rewards of hours at the gym.”

“There is no reason that someone who eats a vegan or vegetarian diet can’t build just as much muscle as an omnivore,” says Matt Ruscigno, MPH, RD. “They can get all of the same amino acids in the right amounts.”

Ruscigno recommends “using protein powders in your pre- and post-lifting snacks, and adds that— as vegans and vegetarians— it’s especially important to mix up your powders, rotating through several types in order to consume a variety of nutrients from different sources.”

Brian Turner, spokesperson for Muscular Development magazine, responds to the list with his own input about veg-friendly protein powders. “I want to highlight two of our favorite options on the Men’s Fitness list. One is the Gold Standard 100% casein powder by Optimum Nutrition. This powder is a great choice for lacto-vegetarians. We recommend using it as a post-workout recovery aid. Try it before bed— experts point out that the slower gastrointestinal release of casein, as opposed to whey, can help prevent muscle tissue from breaking down while you sleep.

“Another good thing about this list is that they highlight pea protein powder, which is an excellent all-plant vegan-friendly option,” says Turner. The article points out that yellow pea powder has been shown by some studies to help prevent hypertension and kidney disease. “Just use it in moderation and in conjunction with another protein source to make sure you’re getting all the important amino acids,” adds Turner.
