Karate Kids Training In Krav Maga

Posted Jun 06 2011 1:47pm

This article is about how Krav Maga is a logical progression for kids who already know karate but want to take their training to a new level. It explains how because of karate, they already have the basic skills and self discipline necessary to become Krav Maga practitioners.

Krav Maga, mixed martial art style training, self defense

There are more misconceptions about Krav Maga than there are about practically any other mixed martial art. Some say that only young people are capable of training in it while others will tell you that young students aren't mature enough to handle it responsibly. The truth is thatKravMagais a great martial art for adults and children when taught correctly.

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts is a martial arts school in the Virginia Beach area. It is the only martial arts school in the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake region that is officially sanctioned to offer training in Krav Maga by Krav Maga Worldwide. Along with Krav Maga, CLMA offers several other martial arts including their very popular "Karate Kids" program.

Many kids who begin studying in CLMA's Karate Kids program eventually graduate to one of the more adult-centered programs. Quite a few of them eventually wind up training in Krav Maga.

Karate kids already have a basis of martial arts fundamentals to build on and training in Krav Maga can help them take their training to a new level. Most kids enroll in martial arts programs because they are enamored by Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan or Jet Li.

For kids, karate is a fun means of emulating their idols, interacting with their peers, getting some exercise and learning some self-defense basics. CLMA Karate for Kids is a “Top Notch” program. However, Krav Maga is on an altogether different level. With it, kids are learning advanced techniques that could someday save their life or help them protect their loved ones. This course is typically only opened to juniors that are at the Black Belt level within the ATA.

Whereas karate is often about form, tradition and the art within martial arts, Krav Maga is about realism and effectiveness. While Krav Maga is still challenging and engaging enough to be fun for kids, it is a more serious matter for the advanced student. Karate Kids who graduate into the Krava Maga and programs offered by CLMA are instilled with a strong sense of responsibility. They are taught not to use their skills destructively or to bully others but only in defense of themselves and their loved ones.

Krav Maga is also a great workout for kids just as it is for adults. Techniques in Krav Maga are derived from street fighting and require strength, skill and speed to execute well. Krav Maga is about launching a rapid series of counterattacks or a preemptive strike that is designed to immobilize an opponent as quickly as possible. This sort of training demands a high level of fitness and often kids have greater access to the energy reserves required to train in this manner.

Karate Kids already have many of the basics down when it comes to kicking, punching and other forms of stand-up striking. They also have a sense of the responsibility one must adhere to when one knows martial arts. Because of this, Krav Maga can help a kid or young adult take their martial arts training to another level.
