...it's a marathon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I constantly find my self having those "oh @%^*" moments. The ones where you are blindsided by the abilities of another kid. And it just brings to the forefront what my kid is *not* doing.
When that happens, I have to remind myself that we're not in a race. We're not competing. At the end of the day, at the end of this marathon, I want my kids to be able to communicate their wants, their needs, their feelings and emotions. I want them to be able to get around independently. I want them to be able to live and work and enjoy their lives.
None of those things are dependent upon them walking by the magical age of 12-18 mos. Or having xx number of words by some set age range. Or, even, being able to self feed at an age appropriate level.
Don't get me wrong ~ I am all for assistance and support to help kids. I think it's imperative for those in the 0-3 set to be in a setting that encourages their development. I'm not one who buys the whole "they'll do it in their own time" philosophy.
But I doubt when my kids are 30 that anyone will give a crap when they walked. Or talked. Or learned self help skills. So, we'll get there. We may get there by a marathon pace and not a sprint pace, and sometimes we may have to stop and walk, but we'll cross the finish line. And isn't that what matters?
