A mother talked to me yesterday about her eight-year-old son who had had impetigo around his nose and mouth for two months. He was still going to school, thus exposing the other children. The doctor who saw the child at an Urgent Care gave the mother some expensive ointment with no other instructions. I was appalled.
My instructions were to buy phiohex or phisoderm and neosporin and bathe around the nose and mouth every two to three hours and then apply the neosporin each time. By putting some neosporin in the front of each of the boy's nostrils that could also help. Bathing the child for two or three days with the phisohex could help reduce the bacterial infection. If the mother was a carrier of the infecting bacteria, her use of neosporin in her nose and bathing with it could also help. By using this technique, I was able to clear up impetigo in my patients very quickly.
Unfortunately, these days medical students are not being taught practical pediatrics. Instead they know about fatal or other diseases but things like the treatment of common childhood problems are not considered important. Thus parents have to be very aggressive in getting good care for their children.
