When girls first get their very first period, it isn't normal "bloody" or red like many people think it is. In fact, its normally brown and light for a while while the body is growing. As you get older it becomes heavier. Also, its normal for girls to have spurradic periods at first. Generally it takes three to four years until you have a regular cycle.
