If there is a therapy available that is safe for my 'lil man, proven to be effective, and does not require the addition of prescriptive medications, then I am all about learning more. Many months ago someone mentioned the use of magnets in treating cerebral palsy symptoms. I looked a little in to it, and then pushed it to the back of my mind once I hadn't found the exact therapy treatments they were speaking of.... it became top of mind recently, and now I have all the info to share! Molecular Magnetic Energizing is a mouthful, so we'll keep with MME from here on out. Surprisingly enough, the forerunner in this alternative treatment is just a little north of me in North Carolina at the Dayspring Medical Center in Monksville. There exists the Advanced Magnetic Research Institute and Dr. Larry Pearce, MD, whom is board certified in Neurology, a diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management, and done extensive research in to the prospects of nutrition and biomagnetical applications for various neurological disorders. So, what is this seemingly too good to be true therapy entail? I know that it is recommended to follow an additional nutritional and therapeutic process along with MME. From the AMRI-NC website, here are the recommended nutritional guidelines :The Role of Nutrition We recommend that patients begin Vitamin/Mineral supplements prior to arrival at AMRI. Our research shows that everyone should take supplements in order to preserve health and recover from illness. Magnet therapy, due to its incredibly rapid cell renewal, utilizes nutrients even faster than routine life.
Nutritional Guidelines Patients benefit from a nutritional program built on the following principles1. Reduce your sugar intake. Eliminate soft drinks from your diet. 2. Eliminate bad fats, including margarine and shortening, baked goods containing shortening or hydrogenated oils; fried anything (potatoes, fish, okra, etc.), vegetable oils with polyunsaturated fats (odorless, tasteless, colorless refined oils such as corn, safflower, sunflower oils) 3. Increase good fats, including: extra virgin olive oil (made from flesh of olive, not pit); flax seed oil; pharmaceutical grade fish oil; butter (use sparingly); raw nuts and seeds. 4. 50 - 60% of your food intake should consist of raw foods, especially vegetables and fruits. 5. Increase fiber (raw vegetables, fruits, whole grains, seeds & nuts)
Recommended nutrients include:
Mindell Plus - complete vitamin, mineral and phyto-nutrient complex. Provides sound foundation for optimal tissue healing and repair. Monthly supply: $99.95
MSM Ultra - for improved circulation and reduction of symptoms of allergy and pain. Monthly supply: $29.95
Fresh Harvest - complex of fruits and vegetables for detoxification of cellular waste (toxins and heavy metals).$28.50
Memory Mate - supplement to improve memory and brain function. $43.00
Custom Nutritional Programs are available once the patient arrives, and may be performed as part of the MSA testing. These specialized programs are also available for other family members.
Easy enough... nutritional supplements and a healthy diet are a wonderful start to a good thing. The next addition to the full MME experience is through physical therapy, something that most children with neurological conditions are likely already involved in. Brayden, for example, has formal hour-long sessions, two days a week... plus, I stretch and work him generally about 2-3 times a day. Since MME, as you'll read below, greatly effects the cellular function within your body... PT is essential to achieve the maximum benefits to you, along with the addition of massage therapy as well.
Sounds amazing so far, right? That's what I am thinking, and of course that is why I am sharing! Now to the point of this post, and the most important aspect of the alternative treatment, what on earth is MME?
Again from the AMRI-NC website, here is the full description of what MME is:
Magnetic Molecular Energizing (MME) MME (Magnetic Molecular Energizing) is a treatment method that consists of the application of high (3000 to 5000 gauss) direct current electromagnetic fields. The MME device consists of two very large and strong electromagnets, with the patient lying in a focal point between the two magnets. Here is a picture:
The human body is electromagnetic, being composed largely of charged particles such as atoms, electrons, protons and ions (e.g. potassium, sodium, etc.)
MME treatment results in a temporary increase in the magnetic force on the atoms composing the cells of the patient’s body in the areas of the MME focal point. The increase in velocity of some electrons and not others causes precession or wobble of the atom. When combined with the higher velocity this leads to enhanced electron transfer. Electron transfer is the basic action in all chemical reactions of the body.
The magnetic field of the MME device acts as a catalyst to improve chemical reactions occurring in the human body. This improves a variety of body functions in the areas of the MME focal point, such as oxygen carrying capacity, assimilation of nutrients, manufacture of enzymes, metabolic waste removal, reduction of free radicals, tissue regeneration and, most importantly healing.
The MME is similar to an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), but is a therapeutic, not a diagnostic tool. The strong magnetic fields used in MRI and MME preclude their use in individuals with implanted medical devices such as aneurysm clips in the brain (if not titanium), heart pacemakers, and cochlear (inner ear) implants. People with pieces of certain metal close to or in an important organ (such as the eye) may not be eligible for MME treatment. Each individual’s circumstances must be carefully evaluated before the person is accepted into the program.Sounds like a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, I know. But basically the magnets create a greater ability for the cells to carry oxygen, nutrients, enzymes, etc. through the body which helps free your body of the toxins, while promoting regeneration of damaged tissue and overall healing. MME has been used to treat many conditions that affect the body's primary systems, such as:
• Alzheimer's • Arthritis • Autism • Cerebral Palsy • Chronic Fatigue • Chronic Fibromyalgia • Chronic Pain • Cranial Nerve Dysfunction • Degenerative Disc Disease • Multiple Sclerosis • Orthopedic Conditions • Parkinson's Disease • Peripheral Neuropathy • Spina Bifida • Spinal Cord Injury • Sports Injuries • Stroke Impairment • Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction
And treatment has shown remarkable improvement in many debilitating symptoms associated with these conditions, such as:
• Gait • Balance • Memory • Vision • Strength • Sensation • Eye Movement • Cognition
Of course, hydranencephaly is so rare that it will understandably never be listed as a treatable condition for alternative therapies. However, the research that is shown for children with similar symptomatic conditions, such as CP or other debilitating neurological, conditions gives great promise, in my opinion, for Brayden and other little hydran miracles.
Specifically, children living with cerebral palsy have shown a decrease in spasticity, improvement in gait, more effective swallowing, much more purposeful movement, better head and neck control, and progression in gross motor skills in walking, crawling, etc. In post-stroke persons, great improvements in speech, eating, and cognitive function have been displayed.
My opinion... definitely worth investigating further into. Although the treatment is considered experimental, it is still regulated by FDA guidelines, however this also means that insurance will not cover treatments but will cover medical evaluations, physical therapies, and therapeutic massages associated with the treatment program. Treatment itself is $50 an hour, and most effective treatments offer up to 150 hours of treatment... each session is anywhere from 4-12 hours long, so generally a 2-week visit is required. However, the after effects are permanent... and you can receive more hours in the future to obtain further progression.
