Happy Christmas... loving time with those who you love

Posted Dec 24 2011 3:08pm
Christmas is here again.  It seems like yesterday that this (dare I use this cliché) quintessential holiday was just celebrated.  I sit here the eve before Christmas, looking at the tree with all of the decorations on it, TV on in the background, and a fridge full of product I am suppose to prepare for the descending family members who will arrive tomorrow sometime in the afternoon to enjoy the food and drink.  We will then unwrap the gifties… smile and say thank you for the prezzies we really didn’t care for and hope there is a receipt to return the gift and get something we really wanted… a question comes to mind… what happened to the Christmases of the past?  Yeah, I posted a photo of my brother, sister and I(I'm the cute one standing), taken sometime in the early 70’s.  Those days seemed simpler, less stressful, less… well … you know?
I have nothing against this season.  I love it.  I hate the fact that because I am a chef, I do the cooking every damn year!  Don’t get me wrong… it’s a double-edged sword.  I love cooking… I love the fact and time when my family taste this great food I cook, and I see the smiles on their faces.  I love it even more when all is cleaned up; dishes are in the dish machine.  I am outside lighting the back yard fire, even if it is 80 degrees in Florida.  I light up my cigar… once a year deal and I ponder on Christmases past!

My kids came to visit before Christmas this year.  Another reminder they are growing up to be fine young adults.  Little do they know how much I really miss them during this time… along with my Mum who passed in 2008!  Yeppers… I know many of you who read this can identify with these words…  Christmas is about being with those who you love and those who love you.  So, while I will miss my kids this Christmas… I also am honestly grateful for all the memories I have as a kid.

I have, like many of you, ignored my blog for a wee bit.  But, I hope in 2012, I can be a little more diligent in keeping up with this thing.  So, to my brother and two sisters freezing their arses off in Britain, to my Dad… my kids and my beautiful wife, I love you all.  Merry Christmas!  To my tweeps and my FB friends… thank you for all the messages you have sent over the year, enjoy some really nice wine paired with some great food.

If you are still looking for that perfect gift, I know it sounds cliché or crass, but… give the gift of time to your loved ones.   I for one will be toasting all of you on Christmas Day (evening).  I will puff on my really nice cigar(Arturo Fuente), sipping on some single barrel Scotch, looking forward to a great 2012.

So here’s to a great 2011 and an awesome 2012.
Cheers and Cin Cin.
