For weight loss, try walking

Posted Sep 27 2010 12:34pm

I took Daphne to the pediatrician to have her 18-month (15-month corrected) visit today. It wasn’t exactly a well visit, since she has had a cold for about a week. She is incredibly congested, and we pull buckets of mucous out her nose regularly. She hasn’t had a fever, and is for the most part her happy, super active, self.   I was afraid she was going to have an ear infection because she has been pulling at her ear since yesterday. She has also been vomiting – even more than usual.

Her ears are fine. There’s a bit of fluid in one side, but definitely not an infection. Her lungs are clear. This is just another annoying head cold. Except, with Daphne, anything is an excuse for puking. After her latest bout of reflux that coincided with new teeth, the GI at the Feeding Center suggested we give Periactin a try. It’s been working – she’s asking for her bobble before it’s due, and accepting solids better, especially if she can self feed. But with the cold, and the mucous, she is throwing up a lot. And as we all know, she now walks. Combine those things: weight loss. I was miserably depressed when I put her on the scale and saw that she is again closer to 17lbs than 18lbs. The doctor wasn’t as frustrated as I was, and said we have to see how she does when the cold has passed. She suggested more fried food. Less exercise. Just kidding. What really happened is that she gave me a pep talk. Her words: “I know it’s hard to be positive when you are so tired, but she is doing remarkably well in spite of the feeding issues.”

They gave me the 15-month assessment sheet, and it is clear that Daphne is behaving somewhere between her corrected and actual ages. She could do everything in the 15-month sheet. The doctor thought her language was above average even for her actual age – she has about 20 words.

The doctor is pretty confident that we will get approval for a second season of Synagis, which will give us a small amount of peace of mind this winter. Monthly shots will begin in November.
