For Greater Glory:The True Story of Cristeros...How Strong Is Your Faith??

Posted May 30 2012 9:41pm

FOR GREATER GLORY Opening June 1,2012!!
Starring Andy Garcia. What happens when the government
decides to clamp down on religious freedom? A true story of the past in Mexico?
A threat to us in America now?
Both?
After the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917, President Calles of Mexico saw the Catholic church as an obstacle to his power. He imposed restrictions on the Church in the Constitution of 1917 to stamp out religion and forbade public worship overnight. The government between 1926-1929, the Cristero War, then exiled priests, jailed&killed many priests for criticizing the Calles government. Catholics were forced to worship underground, until they formed their own army, led by Andy Garcia's character, an atheist General.
This video provides an inside look at the new motion picture "For Greater Glory." This special chronicles the history of the Cristero War with interviews from leading historians, several cast members, and Catholic leaders.
I had never heard of the Cristero War [also known as the Cristiada], where Catholics fought for their religious liberties in Mexico. Apparently, the Knights of Columbus in the US, were a strong voice of support of the Cristeros, however, the KKK opposed the Catholic church&many of the Knights were condemned for their support of the Cristero's. The Knight's of Columbus put pressure on the US government to help by meeting with President Coolidge to pressure President Calles to stop threatening the Catholic Church. After three years, the government finally agreed to a peace agreement&restored religious freedom, but did not change the Constitution. This allowed Calles&his men to violate religious freedoms&resulted in the killing of thousands of Catholics who were once again attacked for their religious freedom&many were shot&killed.  It is estimated that 250 thousand persons died , including citizens and soldiers during the Cristero War. According to a review in RealClearReligion.com:
Calles [went against] his end of the bargain. He directed thousands more Cristeros to be shot, often in their homes. What's more, Calles imposed an education monopoly with a socialist program aimed at taking "possession of the mind of childhood." There would be no more José Luis Sánchez del Rios.
The soft persecution of Catholics in Mexico would continue for sometime through Calles cronies. All was not lost, however. A monument to Calles still stands in his hometown of Guaymas, but Calles would likely want his statue placed elsewhere. Less than a block away, bells of a Catholic Church ring out in perpetuity.
Cristiada, as the film is known in Mexico, is already a Titanic at the box office. For many Mexicans, the film is a story not found in their history textbooks. Actor Eduardo Verastegui  called  the Cristero War a "wound that we've buried. I felt we should bring this wound out, learn from it, and show some of the heroes of Mexico who gave their lives for what they believed."
I feel this is very similar or related to the threats Catholics&Christians are facing today with the Obama administration with the contraception mandates imposed&the pressure of same sex marriage to be accepted, along with requiring military chaplains to perform same sex weddings now that "Don't Ask Don't Tell' has been repealed. As in other countries, tyrants often want to diminish people's faith&attack religion first. For three years the Cristero's [religious families] revolted against the government. They were not taken seriously at first &the government felt the people would eventuallly forget their faith once they were unable to have masses&receive communion. The Cristero's proved them wrong and this movie shares their historic story&fight for religious freedom.
The movie 'For Greater Glory ' starring Andy Garcia and Eduardo Verastegui of the prolife film "Bella" , star in this exciting motion picture. What's amazing is the man who leads the Cristero's is an atheist, but he feels strongly about their right to religious freedom.  Most people have never heard of this war on religious freedom in Mexico, since History is often watered down and revised by liberal textbooks&schools. I am looking forward to seeing this movie and I hope you will too!
Here is the movie trailer of For Greater Glory and a synopsis
What price would you pay for freedom? In the exhilarating action epic FOR GREATER GLORY an impassioned group of men and women each make the decision to risk it all for family, faith and the very future of their country, as the film's adventure unfolds against the long-hidden, true story of the 1920s Cristero War the daring people¹s revolt that rocked 20th Century North America.
Academy Award® nominee Andy Garcia headlines an acclaimed cast as General Gorostieta, the retired military man who at first thinks he has nothing personal at stake as he and his wife (Golden Globe nominee Eva Longoria) watch Mexico fall into a violent civil war. Yet the man who hesitates in joining the cause will soon become the resistance's most inspiring and self-sacrificing leader, as he begins to see the cost of religious persecution on his countrymen . . . and transforms a rag-tag band of rebels into a heroic force to be reckoned with.  The General faces impossible odds against a powerful and ruthless government.  Yet it's those he meets on the journey youthful idealists, feisty renegades and, most of all, one remarkable teenager named Jose who reveal to him how courage and belief are forged even when justice seems lost.
Director Dean Wright brings a visual power honed from years as a leading Hollywood effects guru on such blockbusters as TITANIC, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and CHRONICLES OF NARNIA to this real-life tale that has never been told on screen before.  The film is written by Michael Love.  The producer is Pablo Jose Barroso.  Garcia and Longoria lead a stellar multinational cast that includes the legendary Peter O¹Toole, rapidly rising star Oscar Isaac (DRIVE), recording star and actor Ruben Blades (SAFE HOUSE), Bruce Greenwood (STAR TREK, SUPER 8), Nestor Carbonell (THE DARK NIGHT RISES), Bruce McGill (LINCOLN), Santiago Cabrera (³Heroes,² CHE), Oscar®-nominated Catalina Sandino Moreno (MARIA FULL OF GRACE) and Eduardo Verástegui (BELLA).
