Did You Know That Popcorn Is A Smart Snack Choice?

Posted Jan 15 2009 11:46pm
Sorry its taken me so long to update my blog but I'm just beginning to come out of my tryptophan-induced comma. With my belly still feeling weighed down with the pumpkin cheesecake I ate just about one week ago, I've decided that it is time for me and my family to lay off the heavy snacking and sugar-laden desserts for a while (that is until the Winter Holidays) and return to our regular weekday routine. One of my children's favorite after school snacks is popcorn so when I read the following piece of news in Health Magazine I was pleasantly satisfied to see that they and I had chosen this snack food wisely.

Did you know that popcorn is considered an important whole grain? As many of us are already aware, whole grain foods have been linked to lower rates of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. According to this article in Health Magazine, "people who eat popcorn every day consume 250 percent more whole grain and 22 percent more fiber" than those who don't eat popcorn each day. For those of us cutting back on calories after the "big feast" will find that popcorn is a satisfying and filling snack. My personal favorite is Wild Harvest Organic Microwave Popcorn. It is just as affordable as the other kind and tastes really fresh, as if it was just popped on the stove but without the smell of burning kernels. SmartPop! by Orville Redenbacher is my family's close second choice.

For a fun yet still healthy twist on popcorn, try this recipe from Family Fun Magazine -- Popcorn Squares. They make a great after school snack surprise!
