About a month ago, I was contacted by someone who offered to give me a free Blackberry Storm smartphone and a copy of a book called
The BlackBerry Diaries by Kathy Buckworth. In return, I was to "play around" with the phone and write a review. During the first part of the month that I had the BlackBerry, I admit to stalling on starting it and using it. Don't ask me why, but high-tech stuff intimidates me, and since I'm already a bit of an email-addict, I have long resisted the smart phone thing because I'm afraid that my addiction will follow me everywhere I go. I finally activated the device and set it up so that I could read my email. The Storm is actually a touch phone and very sensitive. It took me some time to get used to the sensitivity and I wondered whether I had thick fingertips or just hadn't gotten the hang of it. It turns out that I just hadn't gotten the hang of it. The scrolling thing is actually smooth and easy, and the screen of the Storm was easy to see and read. The phone is a bit heavy but it feels good in the hand, solid and sturdy. It's a good thing to be able to read email in the car when you're waiting in a carpool line or even in bed, in the dark, when you're sleeping in your sons' bedroom over the Thanksgiving vacation because your parents are in the room with the computer. In that sense, I know that I would love to take the plunge and keep the BlackBerry for a while. Too bad I'm economizing right now and don't want to add the extra $30 per month for the internet service.
As for the book,
The BlackBerry Diaries, I found it entertaining and very light. I agree with Ms. Buckworth that adding a BlackBerry to one's life might be a little like having an extra child. But because I already have three, I'm not sure that I should keep up with the fourth! You can check out Ms. Buckworth's blog at www.blackberrydiaries.blogspot.com
