Last night I was fortunate enough to attend a talk on childhood obesity prevention. I picked up one "pearl" that I will definitely be sharing with my patients and I thought I would pass on here. The National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality obesity prevention group has adopted this slogan which is slowly catching on: 5-2-1-0. It stands for:

  • 5–servings of fruits and vegetables per day
  • 2–no more than 2 hours screen time per day
  • 1–hour of physical activity per day
  • 0–sweetened beverages

If all of my kids that I care for could accomplish these four goals, I have no doubt that many cases of obesity could be prevented and perhaps even some cases reversed. More on the NICHQ obesity initiative can be found at:
