It has been 6 months now since my Nausea really started on a daily basis. Like all my other symptoms is seems to go in inexplicable cycles which seem unrelated to my activity level or anything else. It seems to me that many neurologic disorders also have a cyclical pattern (think MS). I will have weeks where I am so nauseated I can hardly eat (or drink) and have even ended up in Emerg. with dehydration. Then there are other weeks where it is just a mild annoyance. Rather than getting down about it though I think how lucky I am! I know many of you out there throw up everyday and so far I have never thrown up.
Strangely enough I have not even lost a lot of weight. Only about 10 lbs. in the last 6 months. It's like my body knows what's going on and on the days when I do eat normally it stashes it all for the bad days. I also know that things could be so much worse-and probably still will be. I know these things have a habit of worsening not the opposite and I wouldn't be shocked if it is worse than it is now in the future.
For all these reasons I haven't really sought out to many treatments for it. I have tried gravol and Maxeran (Metoclopramide) both of them did nothing except make me sleepy. But both my cardiologist and family doctor seem determined that I try something else to relieve this. They both keep saying "being nauseated everyday is no way to live!!!" and I keep saying "It could be worse" Anyway, I have finally agreed to try Zofran (Ondasetron) to see if it helps. At the very least it will please my docs :)
I have dispensed this drug in the past in my job as a nurse. We used it a lot in pediatric ICU mostly with the oncology patients. I remember it being very expensive and very effective. My family doc had to apply for special permission to order it I think b/c of the cost. Inexplicably, she only ordered 4mg which is half the usual dosage. I didn't realize this until I was getting the prescription filled at the pharmacy. I only got 5 tablets to start with as it is $2.00 per pill!!!! And this is after my extended health benefits have already paid about 80% of the cost.
So I have tried the 4mg tabs twice now and I might as well have eaten a tic tac. I felt nothing. No improvement in nausea but no side effects either. So this morning I woke up with severe nausea again and stomach cramping and decided I would try taking two tabs or 8mg. I still feel nothing!! No relief or side effects. It's only been an hour maybe I have to give it longer but I was expecting something. I have heard good things from others that take it. Any words of advice from those of you that have taken it?
