On The First Day Of Christmas, Santa Gave To Me, A Blind Pug Who Bumps Into Trees

Posted Nov 29 2008 12:20pm

This is so difficult and confusing. Boy Pug seems to be almost totally blind, and in the course of two weeks.

Here's what happened..I need some advice, support, personal experiences, etc. He's going to an opthamologist Monday. Two weeks ago he started bumping into objects like parking sign posts, at night, on walks. he also started balking at going down the steps on walks. I thought he was being a turkey and didnt want to walk because it was cold. When we got to DC last week, it became obvious something was wrong, as he was in unfamiliar settings. Wouldnt go up or down stairs.

Within two days this progressed to not being able to see food in front of his face, and not blinking when you made to poke at his face, etc. He shows NO signs of pain. His eyes seemed quite red, and his face smelled..sour, not cheesy like normal, but no cloudiness or scratches. My mothers vet was completely booked but prescribed an eye antibiotic.A call to my vet and I was referred to a top opthamologist, we see her first thing Monday. We got home this afternoon and Boy Pug cannot see at all...just light, and he seems to be able to see large shapes. He has bumped into everything in the apartment, walked into walls, tripped over toys...I know this seems unbeliveable, after all we just went through. And he's NOT EVEN FIVE!

I am hoping against hope it's temporary, an infection..but very worried it's SARDS or PRA/PRD (I've been reading up and his symptoms seem to be late onset PRD..not fatal.. but permanent blindness)This happened SO QUICK. PLEASE, if anyone has any insight..or if anyone has had a dog suddenly go blind..I need to know this is going to be ok. I have even called the emergency animal vets in DC and NYC and was told nothing can be done until he sees the opthamolgist, as since he has no ulceration/pain it's not dire. But Boy Pug is blind..and it has gotten worse each day..and so quick. I know blind dogs can live great lives, but that's not something I can think about right now.

The pugs have had quite a medical fest this year..with cancer scares, bladder stones, etc. It may seem like a lot to do for dogs, but they are both rescues, and I am responsible for them. I was NOT quite expecting to spend over a quarter of my salary on vet bills in three months time, though..

God forbid this has anything to do with being forced to wear a diaper with a jumbo maxi pad in it..sheesh..
