Auction Exhaustion and Elation

Posted Aug 24 2008 7:22pm
I am thrilled to let everyone know that our school's auction cleared nearly $16,000 total in one night! We were so excited--we were hoping for about 50% of all our donation totals and we did just that (pretty impressive given the sluggish economy.) We had more people than ever attend the auction and bbq supper. It was amazing to see all the people there! (In the picture above, that's the Assistant Principal and myself during the setup prior to the auction.)

Due to all the uncertainty of our medical bills, I had only allowed myself $30 to spend (much less than in previous years.) Of course, I put my entire $30 as a bid on one silent auction item--the autographed James Taylor "One Man Band" cd/dvd set (which I was THRILLED to receive as a donation to the school's auction from Mr. Taylor!)

Within minutes, I was outbid. Although it bothered me to let it go, I felt I had no choice and told myself it was for the good of the school; I even found out it was the parents of one of our teachers who bid against me--fellow JT fans, so that gave me a little consolation. Soon afterward, I was knee-deep running the auction's checkout, so losing the cd/dvd was the last thing on my mind.

When the winning JT bidders came up to pay for it and the other items they had won , they handed me the cd/dvd. I told them that I couldn't accept it, that it was theirs to have. They told me that they just wanted the cd/dvd inside the case so they told me to exchange my plain case for them to use and I could have the case that Mr. Taylor signed. How great is that!

It was a long, tiring day BUT I'm so pleased with how well the auction turned out. While I'm still recovering physically from all the work, I'm so thankful that I was able to do as much as I did for the auction. It's a lot easier to work hard for something if it's something you truly believe in and love!
