Purely Decadent (parent company is Turtle Mountain, based out of Oregon) sent me some of their dairy free and gluten free ice cream desserts to try, and I am so glad they did! I couldn’t believe they make gluten free chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream! No, that isn’t a typo . . . it is true, and it is excellent! The frozen desserts are packaged in small containers similar to Ben & Jerry’s or Haagen Daz, and sell for $3.99 at my local grocery store.
Here is a rundown of their gluten free flavors that I sampled:
Cookie Dough: This flavor is made with coconut milk and is dotted with nickle sized bits of chocolate chip cookie dough. The coconut milk provides a light, flavorful base for the cookie dough, You can definitely taste the coconut flavor. The cookie dough is slightly soft and smooth. I haven’t had chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream in years, so this was a real treat and by far my favorite flavor. Rating: 5 stars
Snickerdoodle: This flavor is made with soy milk and has chunks of snickerdoodle - like cookies. The cinnamon flavored ice cream is smooth, slightly creamy and light tasting- not heavy like a traditional ice cream made with milk. The snickerdoodle cookies bits were not my favorite though- they tasted very course and gritty, almost like pure brown sugar. Overall the flavor of this gluten free product was good, but the gritty texture of the cookies was a disappointment. Rating: 3 stars
Peanut Butter Zig Zag: This flavor is also soy milk based. It features light chocolate ice cream with ribbons of slightly crunchy peanut butter.I found the flavor and texture to be excellent and worth buying again and again. If you like peanut butter cups, you’ll like this frozen dessert. Rating: 4 1/2 stars.
Overall, I was really pleased with all the flavors I tried. I found them all to be high quality, and I knew I could eat them without fear of cross contamination of gluten ingredients.
