The Gluten Free Plaza.com sent me a pack of these Katz Gluten Free large challah rolls to test out. They come in a three pack and should be stored frozen for best results. They sell for $4.29 for a .72 lb package and can be consumed alone or in a sandwich.
The first thing I noticed is that these hearty rolls are quite large and have the appearance of a wheat roll sprinkled with sesame seeds. These gluten free rolls have a homemade look to them- slightly irregular shaped with an uneven top. The inside has the appearance of white bread with moderate nooks and crannies. These look almost exactly like the bakery rolls I used to buy at my local grocery store. I decided to test these rolls in sandwiches, and I am so glad I did. Yum!
I tested my rolls with a messy pulled pork BBQ, ham and cheese, and grilled chicken sandwiches. In all cases I loaded on the sandwich toppings- extra BBQ sauce and mayo, melted cheese and bacon, lettuce, tomato and peppers . . . you name it, I tried to use it. I really wanted to test how these gluten free challah rolls would hold up, because my pet peeve of gluten free bread is taking a bite and having my sandwich crumble all over my plate.
These rolls passed my tests with flying colors! I tested them both toasted and fresh, with no crumbling issues in either scenario. These rolls are not heavy and dense and are soft and chewy. The bread held up well under the toppings and did not get soggy with the sauce and mayo I added to the bread. The flavor was very mild and would pair well with any sandwich you are craving.
The only way I could tell these were gluten free was by the texture. It was smooth, but had a slightly spongy consistency. To me, it wasn’t’ a big deal and overall this is probably one of the best gluten free rolls I have tried.
