Product Review: Amy’s Kids Meals: Baked Ziti - gluten free/ dairy free/ organic/ vegan

Posted Dec 20 2008 5:50pm

I would totally buy this for myself, no kidding. This is such a great idea and it’s tasty as well.  And it only takes 3 minutes to cook in the microwave.

This frozen gluten free kids meal from Amy’s is a winner at my house.  This meal comes with a portion of baked ziti pasta sprinkled with dairy free cheese, broccoli topped with zesty tomato sauce, a piece of gluten free foccacia bread and a generous portion of apple crisp.  Most of the ingredients used to make this meal are organic and high quality, so I feel comfortable feeding this gluten free meal to my children when I want them to have something balanced and tasty, but don’t have the time the prepare it.

And the fun part: it comes with a cute tattoo of Stormy the dog! My girls had a big fight to decide who would get it. (Umm, who’s Stormy, you might be wondering? Stormy is Amy’s real life dog; a one eyed pooch rescued from a local pound.)

Here’s a breakdown of what you get:

Ziti: dressed with Amy’s tangy and flavorful sauce and topped with a sprinkle of dairy free cheese. The gluten free noodles cook perfectly and evenly, and there is just the right amount of sauce.

Broccoli: this serving of veggies also cooks perfectly- not too crisp, not too soggy. It is topped with a small portion of tomato sauce. It tastes good, but I think I would have liked the broccoli better plain.

Focaccia: thick sliced rice based seasoned bread. It is slightly coarse with a touch of sogginess on the bottom. I liked it; my kids not so much because of the extra moisture.

Apple crisp: totally yummy and flavorful. It has the perfect balance of sweet and tart, and the apples aren’t soggy.  It cooks in it’s own container, which is nice.

Overall, I really like this Amy’s frozen meal, and would choose this meal in a heartbeat over the other frozen children’s meals on the market, even though my kids don’t need to eat gluten and dairy free. Thanks Amy’s! This one is a winner.

Rating: 5 stars

Pros: flavorful, organic fruit & veggies, cooks perfectly

Cons: Kids may not like that some of the foods “touch”, the pasta, broccoli and bread cook in an undivided tray
