Interesting article about celiac disease and osteoporosis. It reminds me of a story told to me by the dietitian I saw while pregnant with Luke and had to see a perinatologist to monitor the pregnancy because of gestational diabetes, celiac disease and Graves disease. My dietitian’s husband had recently been diagnosed with celiac disease too. Her husband found out not because of long term gastrointestinal issues but because after lifting heavy materials one afternoon, he proceeded to break several bones and fracture several vertebrae. He was a young 30 something at the time so it was rather peculiar to break so many bones just by lifting heavy objects. After seeing a specialist and having a bone density scan among other tests, he was diagnosed with celiac disease.
Which reminds me, I need to schedule a bone density scan! I would rather find out now if I am having an issue with my bones due to 20+ years being undiagnosed so that I can take preventative measures before it is too late to do anything about it!
