Greater New Haven Celiac Group Members Featured in New Haven Register

Today was a celebratory day for the Greater New Haven Celiac Group. Today there was a front page article on celiac disease in the New Haven Register and a number of our members were interviewed for this article.
More than the fact that our members were featured in the article is the fact that this story made the front page of the New Haven newspaper. Outreach, awareness, and education are paramount for this disease that affects 1 in 144 people in the United States. It is estimated that of those who have celiac disease in this country, only 3% are aware that they have this autoimmune disorder. On average, it takes 11 years to be diagnosed because there is still a lack of awareness and understanding of celiac disease across the medical community.
There is much work yet to be done by all of us to make sure that everyone who has celiac disease in this country is diagnosed earlier on. For the moment, however, the members of the Greater New Haven Celiac Group should pat themselves (and each other!) on the back for the great work they are doing to provide support to celiacs and create awareness in this community.
My hat goes off to the New Haven Register for the great coverage.
