Amy’s Cream of Rice Hot Cereal - gluten free, organic, vegan, GF/CF

Posted Dec 21 2008 10:52pm

With winter weather settling in across the country, I felt this product was just what I needed to try next. Who doesn’t like a hot and satisfying way to start your day? Amy’s Kitchen gives you a way to have that when you are rushed and don’t have the time to cook a hot breakfast.

This gluten free hot cereal product can be found in the frozen foods case of your local grocery store for $2.29. Each package contains one 9 ounce bowl of cereal. To prepare, simply heat in your microwave for 4 minutes, or in your convention oven for 7 to 8 minutes. Since I am not a patient person, I opted for the microwave option.

This hot cereal is creamy and satisfying, fresh from the microwave. The flavor was fairly bland ( hello, it is made of brown rice) with a hint of sweetness from the agave syrup. When I was younger, I used to eat cream of wheat hot cereal ( pre- celiac disease of course!) with a spoonful of brown sugar melted and swirled into my bowl. So, I tried that with this gluten free cream of rice cereal. I was surprised at how similar this cream of rice cereal was to my hot breakfast treat of my childhood.  The cereal was filling and substantial, and didn’t leave me wanting anything else to eat.

I also discovered how fast this gluten free cereal cools. As with most hot cereal, this product thickened considerably and became clumpy as it cooled.  I would suggest eating this cereal piping hot for optimal flavor and consistency. Likewise, because of the mild rice flavor, I imagine you would add whatever you wanted for a tasty variety.

Overall, this is a great product if you want a hot breakfast without the fuss. It is low in fat and calories ( 1 gram fat, 170 calories) and easy to prepare. I rated it 4 1/2 stars because it is very good, but didn’t leave me begging for more. I would happily keep one or two in my freezer for cold mornings this winter season.

Pros: filling, fast prep, mild flavor, creamy when hot, low calorie. low fat

Cons: slightly messy ( see photo above) - keep it covered in the microwave!

Rating: 4 stars

Ingredients: filtered water, organic whole grain brown rice, organic agave nectar, sea salt

If you can’t find this gluten free product in your local grocer’s freezer section, you may purchase it online at
