Special Gifts for Young Children

Posted Dec 09 2013 12:46am

Is there a new baby in your family?

Even the most difficult babies love sound and music. One of the most well-used gifts we received for our first son was a stuffed lamb that had a music box inside. I strapped it to the crib bar just out of reach. It wasn’t intended to be a cuddle toy–just a music maker.

Each evening, after settling my baby down, I would pull the cord on the lamb and the music box would play “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” in a slightly tinny but pleasant tone. It is one of the treasures from their babyhood that I have saved. It’s no longer in production, but there is something better.

Cloud B Sleep Sheep is a plush sheep with a sound machine on the inside. You can strap it to the crib with its velcro strap and choose 20 or 45 minutes of one of four soothing sounds. Great for babies at home and easy to transport while on trips visiting family.

Looking for a children’s gift that will be treasured by parents, too?

After trying several bedtime music collections for my first child, I discovered the magical storytelling of Jim Weiss. We would play the audios every night as part of our “going to sleep” routine. My boys would nod off to sleep without a complaint.

I loved his Sweet Dreams: Enchanting Story Visualizations With Sleepytime Music
and Good Night
recordings so much that I featured all of his recordings in my mail order catalog. (The catalog won two Parents’ Choice Awards based on our outstanding selections and service. It’s no longer operating but I still love to recommend items I know will work for a family.)

Now, Jim Weiss’ recordings have won over 100 national awards.  Today there are 55 recordings in all in four categories: Ages three and up, five to adult, seven to adult and twelve to adult.  Each one is a gem recounting stories from fables, mythology, classical literature and history. Each is conveyed with deep respect and enjoyment for the story.

You can rely on the age guidelines to choose the right gift. Stories for younger children are carefully tailored to their level of understanding.

Just the other day I stumbled across Jim telling two of his great stories on YouTube. Here’s a favorite of young children

You can see how Jim Weiss bring the story alive!

Stories and storytelling have been a part of every culture to entertain, educate and share cultural values. You won’t go wrong giving any of these recordings to your young family members.

What’s your favorite story?
