It doesn't stop there.

The pair have been renting out three of his mother’s properties well below market rates, and the couple took control of two of her cars.

Nope, not done yet.

Mrs. Ljunghammar, the wife, hired a convicted felon to care for her mother-in-law, the detective added, while the couple drew $185,375 from the elderly woman’s bank accounts.

“Ivan asserted complete control over (her) person and finances, isolating her from the rest of her family, preventing her from attending family celebrations or vacations … and using her finances to pay his personal and household expenses,” Seattle Police Detective Pamela St. John told the court.

So far, neither defendant has been jailed.

There is an important lesson to be learned here. You really need to make sure you are taking control of your financing and assets long before you become sick, or unable to manage your own finances.

I doubt the victim, Mr. Ljunghammar’s mother, thought that anything like this could happen to her.

Mr. Ljunghammar’s was able to gain control over his mother's money and assets by using the dementia diagnosis as a tool.

They say, a word to the wise is sufficient.

Is it?
