HI Sophie,
Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Although anyone, even children and teens, can have it if they have had chickenpox, it is usually seen in people over 50 or those who have an immune disorder.
Shingles causes a painful rash on the trunk of the body. It can be very serious if it affects the eyes. For some people, the pain from the rash can last a long time (weeks or months). Shingles is not considered life threatening. It clears up and goes away.
Chickenpox can sometimes cause sterility but this is a rare condition. See this link for more information: http://www.pregnancytoday.com/expertqa/worries/can-chickenpox-make-you-sterile-580/
Best to you,
