What does stage 4 cancer in a glioma brain tumor mean?

What does it mean when someone is diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The cancer is a brain tumor that is very small it was removed but further testing told us it was stage 4 glioma. I know stage 4 cancer is bad but what does it exactly mean.
