Want to Prevent Prostate Cancer and Maybe a Prostatectomy? Get Some Sunshine and Plenty of Vitamin D!

Prostate cancer surgery (prostatectomies) and other treatment options wouldn’t be needed, if we could prevent prostate cancer in the first place. Unfortunately there’s no sure-fired method to do that, but we might get off to a good start if we had enough sunshine.
Sunshine helps prevent prostate cancer surgery and other means for treating most cancers, considering that with enough sunshine, we might not get cancer in the first place. That's because the sun’s rays are not only good for body warmth during a cold winter, but are essential for our health.
The sun is the single greatest natural source of Vitamin D, which safeguards people against the growth of tumors accompanying prostate cancer, breast cancer and many other cancers. Vitamin D also prevents a lower resistance to infection, depression and a host of other things that are dangerous to our health.
African-Americans are particularly susceptible to Vitamin D deficiency. This may be due not to the lack of sunshine but because of long-term hereditary conditions, which may account for a higher rate of prostate cancer in that segment of the population.
It’s known that the Northeast has the highest incidence of cancer in our country. That may not be a coincidence, considering that on average much of the Northeast has the least amount of Vitamin D-producing sunlight compared to the rest of the country. I can testify to this, having lived in the Boston area for 21 years before arriving in sunny Sarasota, Florida, three years ago.
Ask your doctor to check if you have a Vitamin D deficiency. This might be helpful, to determine if some supplements are necessary. But nothing beats natural sunshine.
That's why some experts have suggested that we should not use sun lotion in excess. By seeking to use too much sun screen at the pool or beach to prevent cancer, we may actually be cutting off helpful rays that prevent certain forms of cancer in the first place!
Of course various factors account for prostate cancer and other forms of cancer, so there are no guarantees you can avoid the “Big C” even when you have normal levels of Vitamin D. But this does not refute the fact that Vitamin D has at least 18 positive attributes worth considering.
