Well, back to the story. Velcade didn't work. The next thing was cyclophosphamide. This was given IV. All these treatments were taking a lot of time away from teaching, although Richard had planty of sick time. The combination of treatment side effects and the weekly days off for treatment finally resulted in Richard's decision to retire on disability after a 32 year career in teaching. It was a difficult decsion but it was the right one.
Unfortunately, the cyclophosphamide didn't help and the m-spike continued to rise. In March of 2005, we're off to Mayo Clinic again. Richard's hematologist at Mayo is Dr. Martha Lacy, who is both a Harry Potter and a Denver Broncos fan.
