The great jam hype? Fugedabahdit!

Posted Dec 12 2008 3:42pm

Despite recent, fairly silly,  media headlines, the chances that eating more jelly or jam will seriously impact your cancer (or your risk for cancer) in any positive manner have to be near to zero. And eating that much sugar is likely to cause way more problems than it would ever solve.

Does pectin (a component of most jams and jellies) or a pectin metabolite have some effect on prostate cancer? Yes — at least in the laboratory. Do we think this will be shown to have clinical significance in the next 5-10 years? Probably not.
