Vivienne had a fever every day, her abdomen was distended (swollen), she is throwing up a lot and has had a few other issues. With the goal of figuring out what is going on before a serious problem arises, she was sent for a chest x-ray, CT scan and ultrasound to look for problems in her lungs and gut. All of these came back negative.
This was good news, because initially there was a concern about fluid in her lungs and possible pneumonia, but that has now been ruled out.
In addition, viral cultures have also all come back negative - they tested for a variety of viruses including flu and adenovirus. Additional bacterial cultures (including for our old nemesis, C. diff. ) are still out there waiting for results. If the bacterial cultures are negative and she is still having problems, they will look for fungal infections.
At any rate, with the current status, Vivienne's antibiotics are being changed from Vancomycin and Cefepime to Vancomycin and Meropenem. This combination is "ultra-broad spectrum," meaning it kills a wider variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. I am in a hurry to get back to Princess Vivienne, so I will save my description of my new knowledge of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria for another time.
Finally, Vivienne has NOT had a fever all day today! Pray hard she stays afebrile!!! All in all, this is good news for now, and a reduction in the level of fear, anxiety and tension we experienced this afternoon.
