Could cholesterol-lowering drugs prevent prostate cancer recurrence?

There’s a great post on the NHS Choices Behind the Headlines blog , discussing new research from the US suggesting that statins – commonly-used cholesterol-lowering drugs – might cut the chances of prostate cancer coming back after surgery.

There is some evidence that statins may be helpul in preventing or treating some types of cancer, but it’s not entirely conclusive. This new study has some flaws, and as the NHS bloggers point out:

“It is not possible to say from this study whether statins are associated with an increase in overall survival.”

But if the results are backed up by further research, then there’s a case to be made for larger trials of statins in men with prostate cancer.
