Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis

Posted Jan 14 2009 6:32pm
The doctors' best guess, which can't be confirmed, about what happened with Vivienne is Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis.

Basically, they feel that early on the bacteria caused a problem in Vivienne's gut that lead to a rapidly increasing accumulation of fluid (the ascites). The prompt administration of antibiotics killed off the bacteria, but with the contribution of low albumin levels Vivi's teeny body was not able to handle all of the fluid.

Note that SBP is often seen as a complication of liver or kidney disease, but that is not the origin in Vivienne's case. At any rate, she is feeling better now, eating like a champ, having less nausea and seems quite happy.
