Prostate Cancer Surgery (Prostatectomy) and Health Coaching

I am living proof that after a successful prostate cancer surgery, - a radical prostatectomy, you can emerge healthier if you’re willing to be more proactive. You don’t necessarily have to do what I do, in terms of writing a book, editing a blog, or giving public speeches. But if you choose you can “pay it forward” by guiding others who now find themselves in your shoes. Doing so can be a consolidating experience, not just for them, but for you too.
Following my prostate cancer surgery what led me to start out my patient education and health coaching endeavors? A man I’ll call “John” was newly diagnosed with prostate cancer in December 2007. That occurred exactly eight months after my radical prostatectomy. At the suggestion of his doctor he called me. Quite anxious, he insisted on learning what impact his forthcoming cancer surgery might have on him. Like others after him he came to me not only to get information, but to sharpen his coping skills. He clearly needed support as he considered his options.
Men like John and their partners know they can count on my listening intently to their concerns. They’re aware that after I share my experiences and research with them they’ll be in a better position to make their own decisions in conjunction with their doctors. For that reason health coaching is one of several ways I now reach out to prostate cancer patients, survivors, their wives and significant others. It makes for some very satisfying interaction for all concerned.
