Oral Thrush

Posted Aug 25 2011 12:00am
Ron mouth sores are so bad now, he can't eat anything. About all he can tolerate is drinking Ensure at room tempeture. I suspect that he will lose a lot of weight from this. The past two nights Ron got little sleep. The pain kept waking him up.  So today he conferred with the Oncologist. It turns out Ron has oral thrush .
Thrush is the common name for a mouth infection caused by an overgrowth of the Candida fungus, which normally lives in some people's mouths.  A look inside Ron's mouth reveals white lesions attach to the tongue, inner lips, cheeks  and tongue. He also has sores in the corners of his mouth. This makes it painful to talk or smile.
When a person is healthy, thrush is very a minor problem. However, when a person has a reduced immune system (i.e. chemotherapy), thrush can be much more widespread and severe. It is important to seek treatment as thrush can extend to the esophagus and other organs, such as the liver, the digestive tract, and the lungs. Ron has two prescriptions now; hopefully he'll get relief soon.
