More on the C. Diff, Potential Treatment

Posted Nov 03 2008 9:03pm
Right before I left the hospital this afternoon they proposed treatment for the C. Diff infection. I do not know how the situation was resolved, because Justin has been at the hospital since 4pm and has not contacted me or followed up with any status. I am really concerned, because I have a number of questions and he walked away in boredom when I was discussing them with the nurse. So I guess I just need to cross my fingers and hope all goes well.

My initial concern came because the doctor who explained the C. Diff infection to me advised that treatment was not necessary and would not be pursued. He was thrilled Vivi was getting probiotics, and Wikipedia states that:

Treatment with probiotics ("good" intestinal flora) has also been shown effective. Provision of Saccharomyces boulardii (Florastor) or Lactobacillus acidophilus twice daily times 30 days along with antibiotics has been clinically shown to shorten the duration of diarrhoea

However, right before I left they intended to commence treatment with first-line drug Flagyl. In doing some more research, it seems that C. Diff infection can become severe, in which case it can be called Pseudomembranous colitis. My assumption is that some clinical observation made them concerned that she could develop the severe presentation.

I just wish someone (Doctors, Nurses, Husband who I presume now has that information) would tell me what is going on.
