Medical Bills, Medical Insurance or Snow (Day 319)

Posted Dec 04 2009 7:30am
I received a medical bill this week that was for an emergency room visit that took place almost two and a half years ago.
I immediately felt depression for two reasons. First; how could I still have an outstanding medical bill from 2007 (are there still more bills out there floating around?) and Secondly; that bill was for the emergency room visit that I had with the unstoppable bloody nose. Three days later I would hear from a doctor that I had Leukemia, I would be checked into the hospital, I would be told that I came close to dieing, I would have blood transfusions, chemotherapy, more blood transfusions and my life would never be the same again.
This is my medical bills and insurance paperwork file since July 2007.

I will tell you that my experience dealing with the medical insurance companies and the medical service provider accounts receivables has been no picnic.

When you get a bill in the mail be sure to sit down first before you open it.  Don't be shocked by the amount.  I know that the amount may be for more than you make in a month, a new car, your home, or more.

Hopefully, you have medical insurance.  When this all began I was covered under two policy's (work and spouse's work).  That was very good because what the primary insurance would not cover the secondary insurance would usually pick up.  But, the medical billing offices are not used to dealing with people who have more than one policy though.  So if you have double insurance, like I did at first, and you get a bill that shows one payment or no payments from the insurance companies you have to call them.  Did they bill the primary insurance first?  Did they bill the secondary insurance?  You will be surprised at how many billing errors happen regularly.

The bill I referenced above showed a payment from my primary insurance but nothing from the secondary.  Apparently,  paperwork was misdirected, lost, or something.  I contacted both the service provider and my secondary insurance company.  Hopefully, they can get the rest of the bill resolved this year.

Don't be alarmed when the Insurance company denies your claim at first.  I think that is part of their play book.  You have to fight with them too, sometimes.  I know it is bad enough that you have to fight for your life and they don't appear to be on your side but that is just business.  Be tough!

I love the freshly falling snow.
