Massive Mouth Sores

Ron has painful mouth sores. They are interferring with his ability to eat and even sleep. "Chemotherapy and radiation — alone or combined — can cause mouth sores. That's because these cancer treatments are intended to kill rapidly growing cells — such as cancer cells. Some healthy cells in your body also divide and grow rapidly, including the cells that line the inside of your mouth. Unfortunately these healthy cells are also damaged by chemotherapy and radiation. Damage to the cells in your mouth makes it difficult for your mouth to heal itself and to fend off germs, leading to sores and infections." [ Mayo Clinic ]
We are working hard to make Ron comfortable and yet ascertain he gets proper nutrition. Here's a few things we have learned through research and experience:
Mouth Sore Remedies
1) Biotene Mouth Wash several times a day
2) Coating agents for mouth sores
3) Topical painkillers
4) Medicated lip balm for chapped or cracked lips
5) Sponge swabs (from the pharmacy or your oncology nurse) to clean your teeth with. These are much better than even the softest toothbrush!
Mouth Sore Eating Strategies
1) Eat frequent, healthy snacks vs. big meal
2) Drink through a straw
3) Eat/drink foods at room tempature
4) Avoid spicy and textured/crunchy foods
5) Supplement meals with Ensure
Be sure to let your doctor know that you are suffering from mouth sores. They will want to monitor you for signs of infection and/or weight loss.
