How difficult is it to differentiate melanoma from undifferentiated squamous cell CA.

Posted by aeller

A 60 yo WF with spontaneous finding of 3 metastatic nodes in her left cervical chain.  Reported as an apparent undifferentiated Squamous cell CA.  Physical findings reveal no evident primary.

PE is positive for 2 large pigmented nevi near the left nasolabial fold.  No recent change reported.  Size and color verigation makes them slightly suspicious.

Would the origional routine pathology have included studies to rule out melanoma?  Would it be easily possible to confuse a melanoma for undifferentiated squamous cell CA?
