HOLY PIG! IT'S THE SWINE FLU

Posted Apr 29 2009 12:00am
A lot has been in the news lately about the Swine Flu . Officials say it could become a pandemic. The American Cancer Society released this statement: “We encourage people to approach this public health threat with concern and caution, not panic. It is important to understand that infections of any kind are a special concern for individuals during cancer treatment. That’s because certain treatments, like chemotherapy, can weaken the immune system and make it harder for the body to fight off germs." In addition to influenza, there are other bad bugs out there (such as MRSA , and Salmonella ). So, let's be proactive
  • Wash your hands . Do this frequently and thoroughly. I was taught to recite the A-B-Cs while scrubbing. Some folks sing "Happy Birthday."
  • Use hand sanitizer. Carry travel size with you. Use it when water is not available, but also in combination of handwashing. Use hand lotion to keep your hands from drying out.
  • If you are a cancer patient, consider wearing a face mask in crowded areas.
  • If your city has an outbreak, avoid public places for awhile.
  • Stay three feet away from someone. Do your best to avoid people who are sneezing and/or coughing.
  • Cover your mouth with something other than your hand when you cough or sneeze. Use the elbow technique if you don't have time to reach for Kleenex.
  • Always wash or sanitize your hands after coughing/sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands.
  • Continue to be dilligent, especially in medical facilities.
  • Caregivers- this is something I do! I take a shower and change my clothes after work. I don't want to carry any germs home to Ron.
  • Practice food handling safety .
  • Don't share towels, water bottles, writing utensils, etc.
  • Eat healthy, exercise and manage stress to keep your immune system strong.
  • If you are sick, stay home. Do your part to avoid spreading illness.
