Follically Repaired-Are My White Blood Cells on Vacation??

Posted Aug 29 2008 12:00am

a group

Ladies, I need a group. This group is very special because this will finally be the place where I ultimately fit in.  I seem to find myself as a “betweener” once again!

When learning that I carried the BRCA2 gene, I had prophylactic mastectomies. My mother, my mother’s sisters, my mother’s mother, and my two sisters are all cancer survivors. I never looked back on my decision for the surgery.  Just seven months after my surgery, Alopecia Universalis entered my life!   My appearance and my situation was cause for confusion. Everyone just assumed I had cancer.  I found myself making lengthy explanations about my situation.

Just last year, I heard the word “pre-vivor” associated with women who have taken the pro-active step and removed healthy breast tissue.  I was relieved to have this “name tag” and finally had a word that aptly described my status.

Now I feel like I am in a similar position. I have been living with Alopecia Universalis for the last seven years. Just 3 months ago, my follically impaired hair began to miraculously recover.  Once again, I wonder what to now call myself? I know that my hair could fall out again at any moment. The fight is on, and I am defending myself against those white blood cells that once attacked my hair follicles.  I was once considered follically impaired, but for now, I am follically repaired.

Want to help? I am ultimately looking for a new one word description for Alopecians who have regrown their hair.  Tell me your thoughts and catchy phrases.  I want to hear them!  Hurry – before my hair falls out again!
