Do regular smear tests mean you are unlikely to get full blown cervical cancer? I've always had a smear test every 3 years.

I had a smear test today and the nurse noticed some old blood.  She asked if I had bleeding between periods.  I said 'sometimes'  but I don't really I had only noticed a tiny amount of dark blood this morning before the smear test. I asked if this could be serious and she said keep a close eye - who knows.  I'm now worried.
